Rehearsing and performing the ballet was quite a challenge because ballet is outside of my comfort zone. Through my training at Loyola, my ballet technique is improving; nonetheless, I found the ballet to be very difficult for me, both technically and emotionally. During my freshman year, I would not have been able to execute this ballet like I am able to now. And now, there is still plenty for me to improve upon. For example, the more I look at the picture I have included, the more I see problems with my technique and placement. This does not discredit the work I have done, however it does show that I must continue to research ballet technique and movement efficiency. I believe my critique of this photo is an example of one of my weaknesses as a dancer--I tend to be hypercritical of myself. This can sometimes prevent me from seeing the growth and improvement in my technique.

The Dance Research Symposium did not only give me the chance to personally research dance, but it also gave me the opportunity to hear my peers have found through dance research. Performing on a stage dedicated to presenting findings through research further elevates dance as a field that should be respected. Many do not see dance as research. Having the opportunity to discuss with various professionals has not only given us as artists a voice, but also credibility.

Dancing for a purpose is more than just personally fulfilling. We performed pieces for the Climate Change Conference in front of professionals and experts in the Environmental Science field, people who are not as exposed to dance as we are. The ability to see such an important topic conveyed through movement brings thoughts and emotions that could not develop in any other form. Movement makes people feel and provides insightful and heartfelt visuals to real, pressing issues in our world.

Dances of Death and Light- Annual Dance Concert
"Communal Rite" (Understudy) Choreographer: Brian McGinnis |

The Annual Dance Concert my freshman year posed many mental and emotional challenges. When I was not cast, I decided that I would ask and see if I could be an understudy for "Communal Rite," a piece that did not have any understudies originally cast. Being told yes and given this opportunity gave me the chance to see what the rehearsal process was like for concert dance and learn from the guest artist Brian McGinnis.
